Rem. Enregistré comme subst. masc. dans BESCH, 1845, LITTRÉ et GUÉRIN, ce mot ne semble guère usité qu'au Canada où il est empl. au fém. (cf. ex. 2), sans doute sous l'infl. des subst. en -ouche qui le plus souvent sont du genre fém. (cf. p. ex. babouche, embouche, escarmouche, retouche, etc.).
Prononc. Seule transcr. dans LITTRÉ : ba-rou-ch'. Étymol. et Hist. 1820 « voiture à deux roues » (Hermite de Londres, I, p. 341 dans Fr. mod., t. 20, p. 304 : L'un ... se pique de conduire mieux que son cocher sa barouche attelée de quatre chevaux; l'autre conduisant un landaw). Empr. à l'angl. barouche (1813, Examiner 29 Mar. 198/2 dans NED) lui-même adaptation d'un all. dial. attesté sous les formes barutsche, birutsche dans G. WAHRIG, Deutsches Wörterbuch, Gütersloh 1970; cf. la forme birutsche dans un texte angl. dès 1805 dans NED; l'all. est empr. à l'ital. biroccio « voiture de transport à 2 roues » attesté sous la forme baroccio dep. le XVIIIe s. (Algarotti dans BATT.), adaptation du lat. médiév. birotium (cf. birodium dans CGL IV, 488, 54), aussi attesté sous la forme barocium (XIIe-XIIIe s. Annales Januens II, p. 128, II dans Mittellat. W., s.v. birot(i)us, 1484, 62), ces deux formes se rattachant au b. lat. birota (brouette), avec suff. nominal neutre lat. -ium et transformation de i- initial en a- devant liquide (BOURC.-BOURC. § 55 et 47, rem.
